Little Tyson Victorious at the Fitz!

|
From Fightnews.com (1/30/12) – Poland’s Kamil “Little Tyson” Laszczyk (7-0, 5 KO) won the Mid-South featherweight belt during the main event in Tunica, Mississippi, winning 60-54 on the scorecards after a hard battle in every round against seasoned Texas champion Samuel Sanchez (7-3, 3 KO). “It was a lot tougher fight that I expected. Sanchez came to fight, had two months to prepare and never backed down. I liked this challenge but it was a real test versus a fighter with a lot more experience in American-style boxing that I had. At least until this night,” said 21-year-old Laszczyk, a Polish national champion fighting now for Global Boxing in North Bergen, New Jersey. continued at Fightnews.com

FITZ REPORT – MAYFIELD WINS NABO JR. WELTER TITLE OVER LOPEZ
Report By Michael Sheffield, Post Fight Interviews by Tracy Morin, Memphisboxing.com
The 10-Round NABO Jr. Welterweight Championship between Karim Mayfield and Patrick Lopez was everything the crowd at The Fitz has come to expect over the event’s history. After a slow start, Mayfield (14-0-1 10 KOs) and Lopez (20-4 12 KOs) would open the third round wrestling into the ropes. Lopez would leave the exchange with a cut over his left eye that bled and threatened to derail the fight. However, his corner would do an outstanding job stopping the bleeding throughout the fight. TITLE FIGHT FEATURED AT
"FIGHTS AT THE FITZ"
MEMPHIS, TN - Prize Fight makes a triumphant return on October 1st as it presents the latest installment of "Fights at the Fitz" from the Grand Ballroom at Fitzgerald's Hotel & Casino in Tunica, MS. There have been many first class line ups featuring many world class boxers during the impressive seven year run of the "Fights at the Fitz" series, but the October 1st show may showcase the best match-up ever during this record breaking series. Boxing fans are in for an amazing fight as undefeated rising prospect Karim "Hard Hitta" Mayfield 14-0-1 (9 KO's) meets former two-time Venezuelan Olympian Patrick Lopez 20-4 (12 KO's) for the vacant NABO Jr. Welterweight Championship. Mayfield, 30, rose to prominence in the boxing world as he stopped former World Champion Steve Forbes by way of tenth round TKO in front of a live viewing audience on ESPN Friday Night Fights this past June in Austin, TX. The Forbes fight was considered by many boxing insiders to be a risky fight and a big step up in competition level for Karim Mayfield, but Mayfield showcased himself to the boxing community as a contender to be reckoned with by stopping Forbes. Mayfield's TKO stoppage of Forbes was the first time in forty-five professional bouts that Forbes has been stopped short of the scheduled distance. Standing in Mayfield's way on October 1st at the Fitz will be the formidable Patrick Lopez. Lopez represented his country of Venezuela in both the 2000 Olympics in Sydney and also the 2004 Olympic games in Athens. The southpaw Lopez is no stranger to up and coming prospects as he has fought the likes Hank Lundy, Tim Coleman and Prenice Brewer to name a few. In August of 2010 Lopez entered the ring as an underdog against the undefeated Prenice Brewer and shocked many as he demolished Brewer on way to third round TKO. The Main Event between Karim Mayfield and Patrick Lopez is scheduled for ten rounds.
As if the stellar main event wasn't worth the price of admission alone, Prize is set to deliver a star studded seven bout undercard. One of the fights featured on this undercard is the return to the ring of middleweight Mean Joe Greene 22-1 (14 KO's). The southpaw Greene was on the rise to stardom when he met another undefeated prospect in Vanes Martirosyan on June 5, 2010 in Yankee Stadium. Joe Greene lost the fight to Martirosyan by unanimous decision in a bout that was filled with low blows from each side and tenth round knockdown of Greene. After the loss to Martirosyan, Greene has taken some time away from the ring and is now ready to return against Pete Johnson of Sardis, MS in a six round middleweight bout.
Another intriguing match-up on the card is a six round cruiserweight clash between Joell Godfrey 11-4-1 (5 KO's) and Calvin Rooks 2-2-1. Godfrey, a former star of the reality series "The Contender", looks to get his career back on track again the upset minded Rooks of Memphis, TN. Rooks was in the same situation when he faced the favored Sharif Kemp this past July at the Fitz. Rooks shined in that fight as he won an action packed four round unanimous decision over Kemp.
Rounding out the exciting night of fights will be an exciting female bout between Stacy Pollock and Lucretia Meacham in the lightweight division, local favorite Marlon Lewis goes up against Erik Hernandez-Perez in a four round lightweight clash, Gary Jones 21-2 (8 KO's) of Washington D.C. is slated to do battle with veteran Chad Greenleaf in a six round middleweight affair and Polish featherweight sensation Kamil Laszczyk 3-0 (3 KO's) will meet local Memphis Terrance Roy in a four round match.

The March edition of Fights at the Fitz offered up five bouts that showcased a range of styles, from hard-hitting heavyweights to slippery southpaws.
The welterweight main event saw Pittsburgh’s Jesse Lubash (14-0, 8 KOs) taking on the more experienced Germaine “Silky” Sanders (27-8, 17 KOs) from Chicago. Round 1 was a feeling-out round, with both fighters testing their jabs, though Lubash also found success with several snapping body shots.
Lubash dominated round 2 as he hooked off the jab and landed two solid rights en route to a knockdown. Sanders fell again while pressed to the ropes (ruled a slip by referee Randy Phillips), and Lubash continued throwing left hooks and body shots that left Sanders disoriented—and in the wrong corner—after the bell.

On January 29, Fights at the Fitz rang in the new year with six competitive bouts at the Fitz Hotel and Casino in Tunica, Mississippi. Some of the fighters, meanwhile, got their own bells rung, as half of the fights didn’t go the distance.
The middleweight main event featured Dominic Wade (9-0, 7 KOs), named one of the top prospects for 2011 on ESPN’s “Super 25” list. Wade was already gearing up for an appearance on Friday Night Fights on February 18, but first he’d have to get past the more experienced Brian Norman (17-10, 5 KOs).
Wade began the fight briskly, and quickly found a home for left hands to Norman’s body, dominating the round, though Norman was able to land a quick combination just before the bell. Wade’s corner, sensing his early control of the fight, urged him between rounds, “Take your time!”

Porter vs Munoz
Added as Co-Feature to Tarver-Aguilera
Posted by: Showtime on 10-08-2010.
NEW YORK – Feeling like he has much more to give the world of boxing, four-time light heavyweight world champion Antonio Tarver will jump two weight classes to the heavyweight division in his comeback to the ring on ShoBox: The New Generation on Friday, Oct. 15, LIVE on SHOWTIME® (11 p.m. ET/PT, delayed on the West Coast).
Tarver (27-6, 19 KOs) of Tampa, Fla., will get his first heavyweight test in a 10-round tilt at Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Okla., when he squares off against 24-year-old Nagy “Dominican Dynamite” Aguilera (16-4, 11 KOs) of Newburgh, N.Y. by way of the Dominican Republic.
In an exciting 10-round welterweight co-feature, former Manny Pacquiao sparring partner and promising, unbeaten Shawn Porter (16-0, 12 KOs) of Cleveland, Ohio, takes on a game Hector “El Huracan” Munoz (18-3-1, 11 KOs) of Albuquerque, N.M.
Tarver is making the move from the SHOWTIME broadcast booth back to the ring, where he hasn’t fought since May 2009. Tarver’s comeback is an attempt to become only the third fighter to move from light heavyweight to win a world title in the heavyweight division. It’s a long road but if he’s successful, Tarver would join elite company with Michael Spinks, who won the IBF heavyweight world title in 1985, and Roy Jones Jr., who won the WBA heavyweight world title in 2003.
A 13-year pro and just a month shy of 42, Tarver is a former WBC-IBF light heavyweight world champion. “People either think I’m crazy or they think I’m brilliant,” said Tarver. “They’re excited because there’s not a marquee name that is carrying the torch for the Americans. I just need about two or three fights to show I’m a real threat.”
Aguilera boasts an impressive opponent list throughout his three years as a professional. The 24-year-old holds a career-best first-round knockout over former WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev in 2009.
A reporter recently asked Aguilera what it would be like to send another fighter into retirement after Maskaev left the public eye following his loss to Aguilera. “My job is not to retire guys, but just beat them,” Aguilera said. He has also shared the ring with the likes of Samuel Peter and, most recently, Maurice Harris in a 12-round unanimous decision loss on Aug. 6.
In Tarver, he’ll face not a “plodding heavyweight” but a “dazzling heavyweight,” to use Tarver’s words.
“I’ve got moves, speed and quickness,” Tarver said recently. “These big guys think they can just come in here and whop me down; they got another thing coming. They’re going to have to find me first. I’m going to be all over them. From every side, every angle. In and out; from the left side and the right. I’m unloading my bag of tricks.”
He continued: “I’ll probably come in at 217 and that’s beautiful. I’m not going to be a slow 230-pound fighter. I’m not going to do it. We’re going to match hearts against hearts and will against will and when it comes to the skill they can’t compete so that’s where we’re going to live. That’s where the chips are going to fall. If they don’t knock me out I don’t see them winning.”
The active Porter will be fighting on ShoBox for the fourth time in 10 months. In his last fight in a ShoBox co-feature on July 16 in Southhaven, Miss., he won a 10-round unanimous decision against left-handed Ray Robinson. On May 22 he recorded a fifth-round TKO win against Robert Kliewer and he knocked out Raul Pinzon in the first round of a ShoBox co-feature on April 16 in Salisbury, Md. He made his ShoBox debut in Hinckley, Minn., registering a fourth-round TKO against Jamar Patterson on Dec. 18, 2009.
Officially dropping down from junior middleweight because of his height, Porter was praised for his skills even before the move. In ESPN.com’s 2009 Prospect of the Year piece, Dan Rafael listed Porter as one of the future stars of boxing. “[Porter] was an outstanding amateur and has a bright pro future,” said Rafael. “The Cleveland resident is 5-7 and stocky, so perhaps a little undersized for [the junior middleweight] division. But what he lacks in size, he makes up for in speed, power and determination.”
The 22-year-old Porter had a stellar amateur career, winning the 2007 National Golden Gloves title and serving as alternate on the 2008 U.S. Olympic team.
Porter holds amateur wins over current pro prospects Fernando Guerrero, Danny Jacobs, Shawn Estrada, Demetrius Andrade and Edwin Rodriguez.
Porter said he learned a lot from his training sessions with Pacquiao. “I took a lot from that experience,” he said. “He has a lot of good training habits and rituals that he uses, like praying before and after a training session, and his work ethic is pretty amazing. That kind of stuff stuck with me, and I think it’s really going to help me throughout my career from a training aspect to actually performing in the ring.”
Porter will continue the trend of stepping up his level of opposition in each ShoBox appearance when he faces Munoz.
At the age of 32, Munoz is a seven-year pro. He built an impressive 18-1 record over the first four years of his career with 17 of those 19 fights coming in New Mexico. Munoz has said that personal issues have kept him inactive over the past three years but that he is ready to dedicate himself to boxing completely now. In his last fight on April 17, Munoz was TKO’d by Philadelphia prospect Mike Jones in Atlantic City, N.J.
Munoz came to the sport late at age 18 as a way to stay out of trouble and had just three amateur fights.
He has worked as a chief sparring partner for the late Arturo Gatti and Fernando Vargas, whom he calls one of his best friends. In fact, Munoz said he will wear the robe Vargas gave him as a wedding gift into the ring on Friday night.

Barnett defeats Hendrix
Ty Barnett 18-1-1 (12 KO’s) suffered through a serious injury to his right hand as he pounded out a 8 round unanimous decision over the formidable Tyrese Hendrix 18-2-1 (7 KO’s) Saturday night in front of a standing room only crowd at The Fitz Casino in Tunica, MS.
The first round saw both fighters feeling each other out with limited action, but the excitement picked up in the 2nd as Hendrix surprised most prognosticators by engaging Barnett on the inside. This made for an entertaining bout for the live audience as the action was fast and furious from the 2nd round on. Barnett began working behind a stiff jab in the 5th round and was seemingly able to put some control to the fight as he appeared to easily win rounds 5-7 and take a lead on the scorecards that Hendrix could only over come by scoring knockdowns. The 8th saw both fighters attempting to stop the other as to not leave it in the judges hands. It appeared to be obvious that the consistent body work from Barnett was taking it’s toll though as Hendrix could not seem to sustain a full 3 minute round of action late in the fight. The judges scored the fight 80-72, 79-73, 79-73 all for Ty Barnett. This writer had the fight scored 77-75 splitting the first 4 rounds and narrowly giving Hendrix the 8th. It was the command that Barnett took in the middle rounds that won him the fight.
Following the decision Barnett stated that he was ready to fight the best in the 135 lb division. “I would like to fight guys like John Molina. I want to fight for regional titles and then world titles. Now is my time, I am not getting any younger,” stated the winner Barnett.
In other action 2008 Bahamian Olympian Taureano Johnson 4-0 (4 KO’s) weathered an early onslaught by Roy Ashworth before landing to crushing right upper cuts in succession that laid the tough Ashworth out for the count. Doctor Jerry Gentry treated Ashworth in the ring as it took him quite a while to gain his composure. Later, while dining, Ashworth suffered breathing and dizziness issues and was immediately air lifted to the closest hospital where reports are that he was treated for fractured facial bones and released. Our prayers and thoughts go out to Roy Ashworth and his family on a quick and healthy recovery.
The sell out crowd at The Fitz was Prize Fight Boxing’s 88th consecutive sell out of a casino show. The show will be broadcast in it’s entirety on Saturday night July 31st on Sportsouth as part of Prize Fight’s “Mississippi Fight Night” series.
Undercard Results:
Nathan Bedwell 2-3 (1 KO) KO2 Hoyt Hutchinson 1-1 (1 KO)
Keuntray Henson 2-1 UD4 Rohan Wilson 4-3-1 (2 KO’s)
Dedrick Bell 3-2 (2 KO’s) UD4 Josh Williams 0-1

Guerrero Captures NABF Middle Crown!
Porter Decisions Robinson after Battle!
By: Michael Sheffield, Photos: JD Meredith / Memphisboxing.com
The DeSoto Civic Center played host to its first nationally televised boxing event with Showdown on Showtime, which featured rising stars and local favorites Fernando Guerrero , Shawn Porter and Lanard Lane taking on their toughest challenges to date against Ishe Smith, Ray and Mike Dallas Jr. on the televised card.
The main event of Showdown on Showtime would prove to be one of the two most entertaining fights of the entire card. Unfortunately, by the time middleweights Fernando Guerrero and Ishe Smith made their way to the ring for their 10 round NABF Middleweight Championship fight, more than half the crowd of 2,700 had already left DeSoto Civic Center, most likely due to the fact the main event begn around the eleventh hour.
The fans that remained were treated to a methodical and skillful performance from Guerrero (18-0, 15 KOs), who would start the fight slowly and gradually employ the power and speed he’s known for in Mississippi boxing circles. However, Smith (21-4, 9 KOs) would put forth his best effort and end up making the fight a lot closer than the end result would have the casual fan believe.
Both fighters started the 1st and 2nd rounds feeling each other out before Guerrero would open up his tool box in the 3rd. Smith would openly complain in the 3rd round about Guerrero throwing low blows, despite landing a few questionable shots himself.
However, Smith would open up his own array of skills in the later rounds, backing up Guerrero on occasion and landing a quick, flush jab that would knock Guerrero down, ever so briefly, but for the first time in his career to close the 8th round.
Smith would sense opportunities in the 9th and 10th round, arguably winning one, if not both rounds before losing a unanimous decision 96-93, 95-93, 97-91.
Welterweights Shawn Porter (15-0, 12 KOs) and Ray Robinson (11-1, 4 KOs) would be
responsible for the most entertaining fight of the night with both fighters trading hard, fierce shots in their 10 round bout.
Robinson, who easily a height advantage of at least six inches on Porter, couldn’t utilize that advantage to prevent Porter from constantly invading the inside and landing hard head and body combinations over the course of the first five and a half rounds, before knocking Robinson down in the 6th round. Robinson would beat referee Randy Phillips’ count and survive the round. He would then literally run during the entire 7th round to regain his wits.
Robinson would finish the fight with just enough activity to keep Porter honest, but the outcome of the fight was never in doubt. Porter would take a unanimous decision, 99-89, 97-92, 98-91.
Junior Welterweights Lanard Lane (12-0) and Mike Dallas Jr. would also go the distance in an 8 round match up that was short on action until the later rounds.
Dallas would do enough early to maintain a lead on the scorecards, which led Lane to turn up the heat in the final two rounds, but it would be too late, as Dallas would win a unanimous decision, 78-74 on all three judges’ scorecards.
The first (and best) and preliminary bought of the night would feature promising middleweight Dennis Douglin (9-0 5 KOs) taking on journeyman Marteze Logan (26-43 2 KOs) in a scheduled 8 round contest.
Douglin would impress early, cutting off the ring and dominating the first two rounds, while the always-tough Logan would rely on his defense and chin before it became obvious Douglin was the more skilled fighter.
After opening the 3rd round with a right jab that sent Logan into the ropes, Douglin would move in to finish his opponent, but couldn’t pull it off. Logan would actually end the round with an impressive flurry that may have scored points, but didn’t hurt Douglin.
The next two rounds would feature Logan taunting Douglin by lowering his hands and
offering up his chin. He would also resort to turning his back on Douglin, which appeared to frustrate referee Randy Phillips. Early in the 5th round, Phillips stopped the fight, appearantly not seeing enough from Logan, and award Douglin a TKO within the first 46 seconds of
the round.
Junior Middleweight Bobby Bryant (4-0, 3 KOs) would continue his string of impressive performances against Andrew Hartley (2-16, 2KOs), who would have been better off anywhere but in the same ring as Bryant. Bryant, who always puts on a technical and powerful fight eliminated Hartley within the first 1:39 of the first round, knocking him down with a left hook before finishing Hartley by TKO in his own corner with a series of combinations that left his opponent seated on the ropes in the corner.
The evening’s next bout featured Memphis Jr. Welterweight Marlon Lewis (3-1) against John Willoughby (1-3, 1 KO) in a 4-round fight that would go the distance and provide the first surprise of the evening.
While Lewis has been able to pad his record with two unimpressive decisions against Chris Gray, Willoughby would not only prove to be a tough out, but would come alive in the final three rounds to dominate the soft-punching and poorly conditioned Lewis.
Willoughby would win over the crowd mid-way through the 3rd round by punishing Lewis against the ropes and almost knocking him down before the bell ended the round.
The 4th round would be more of the same, with Willoughby winning the round, despite wearing himself out. However, the judges had seen enough to award him a unanimous decision (37-39 on all three judges’ scorecards).
The remaining preliminary bouts would feature professional debuts from two heavyweights that showcased skills better fit for a tough man competition. Heavyweights Curtis Tate and Jonathan Perry needed little skill to score immediate knockouts of their opponents, Jason Harbin and Ozell Caldwell, respectively.
Brawler Dedrick Bell (1-2, 1 KO), would employ his wild tactics to dispatch Tim Reynolds (0-3) immediately in a bout that actually took less time than Bell’s entrance.

Guerrero gets by Smith!
Porter, Dallas Jr. also victorious
From Fightnews.com, photo By JD Meredith

Top middleweight prospect Fernando Guerrero (19-0, 15 KOs) pounded out a close ten round unanimous decision over tough veteran Ishe Smith (21-5, 9 KOs) on Friday night at the DeSoto Civic Center in Southaven, Mississippi. Guerrero scored the biggest win of his career and had to work for it every minute. Smith scored a knockdown in round eight to get back a point deducted in round six for a low blow. Scores were 96-93, 95-93, 97-91.
In a very good fight, unbeaten jr middleweight knockout artist Shawn Porter (16-0, 12 KOs) won a ten round unanimous decision over Ray Robinson (11-2, 4 KOs). Porter broke open a close fight by dropping Robinson in round six and punishing him for the balance of the round. Robinson was on his bicycle in the seventh as Porter stalked him. But, after that Robinson battled gamely until the end. Scores were 99-89, 97-92, 98-91.
In a clash of undefeated welterweight prospects, Mike Dallas, Jr. (15-0-1, 5 KOs) kept his ’0' intact with an eight round unanimous decision over Lanard Lane (12-1, 7 KOs). Scores were 78-74 on all cards.

Fights at the Fitz Report!
By Michael Shefield @ ringside
Prize Fight Boxing’s Fights at the Fitz series returned Saturday night, with a national audience tuning in on SportSouth for “Mississippi Fight Night.”
The five-fight card ran the gamut from Jr. welterweights to heavyweights, with heavyweights Adam Kownacki (2-0, 2 KOs) and Yohan “The Bodysnatcher” Banks (3-3, 1 KO) putting on the most entertaining fight of the night in a 4-round battle.
The Polish Kownacki, fighting out of Brooklyn, brought a sizable and vocal cheering section with him and he wouldn’t disappoint the fans. Banks would give it his best shot for the first two rounds before he ended up on the receiving end with Kownacki punishing his midsection in the third round. Banks would survive the round and Kownacki would pick up where he left off immediately in the 4th round.
After a standing 8-count from referee Randy Phillips, Kownacki would end the fight with a knockout at 1:11 of the 4th round.
In the main event, Jr. Middleweight Shawn Porter (16-0, 16 KOs) would need 4 of the scheduled 8 rounds to pick apart Bobby Kliewer (10-10 6 KOs), who had 6-inches on his opponent.
Porter was clearly quicker and more skilled than Kliewer, who would attempt to lean on him to slow his momentum. Porter eventually was able to neutralize Kliewer and would stun him at the end of the 4th round, before quickly eliminating Kliewer at 1:08 in the 8th round by TKO.
Marlon Lewis (2-1, 1 KO) and Chris Gray (1-1 1 KO) would renew hostilities from an underwhelming April bout at the New Daisy with another underwhelming opening bout. Gray, who was visibly tired at the end of the first round of the previous fight, actually put up more of a fight this time around, catching Lewis with hard hooks and jabs throughout the fight before tiring in the 4th round.
However, as has been his MO during his 3-fight career, Lewis couldn’t finish his opponent, but did enough to win a unanimous decision 39-35, 40-34 39-35.
Welterweight Rodney Coffman would notch his first victory against Lewis Crews (0-2), scoring a TKO in 55 seconds of the second round.
Both fighters would trade hard and wild shots throughout the first round with Coffman getting the better of his opponent as the round went on
Light heavyweight Donta “The Dream” Woods (6-0, 5 KOs) would score a TKO at 2:27 of the second round against Roy “The Destroyer” Ashworth (5-8 2 KOs) and
Middleweight Dominic “The Blade” Wade (6-0 5 KOs) would take a unanimous decision (40-35, 40-35, 40-33) against Michael Faulk (2-0)

Sparring Partner No More: Showtime For Shawn Porter
Posted by: Jake Donovan on 12-16-2009.
It’s often said that it’s not what you know, but who you know.
For the past couple of months, Shawn “Showtime” Porter knew and shared ring space with the sport’s pound-for-pound king, brought in to help Manny Pacquiao prepare for last month’s destruction of Miguel Cotto.
The mere mention of Pacquiao’s name instantly generates hundreds of thousands of hits, which means that much more attention paid to anyone and anything associated with said news entry.
Simply put, more attention was paid to Porter’s every move during his time in Pacquiao’s camp than any other point in his life, at least to date.
Who he knew helped give a career boost not often seen for a 22-year old in just his second year as a pro and with minimal television exposure.
But in boxing, who you know rarely if ever is of any service in the ring. Once the bell ring...(click here to read full article) |

Showtime’s Banner Year Gets To End With A Bang
Posted by: Jake Donovan on 12-09-2009.
It’s been a long overdue revival for the men and women part of the entity that refers to themselves as “America’s #1 Boxing Network.”
This past year for Showtime was no longer about keeping pace with HBO and having to play second fiddle in the industry’s pecking order. It was a year in which they made all of the right moves, gave the fans the fights they wanted to see, and broke new ground with its critically acclaimed Super Six World Boxing Classic.
And unlike last year, they get to end this one with a bang.
Of course, it’s never Showtime’s intention to simply go out with a whimper. There’s always a Plan A in place, only to sometimes have those visions compromised for the sake of staying on schedule and not leaving its target audience empty-handed.
It was 52 weeks ago when the network planned to end its 2008 run with a rubber match to one of the wildest rivalries in recent time. Kendall Holt and Ricardo Torres were prepared to meet for the third time in 15 months, with the plan for a conclusive ending to finally come of a wild series that has seen both fighters score controversial knockouts.
Those plans were shot to sunshine when Torres pulled up lame late in training camp, leaving Holt without a dance partner late in the game. Demetrius Hopkins was brought in as a pinch hitter, which meant an anticipated shootout was replaced by a bout that turned out to be more entertaining than expected, though not particularly memorable in the grand scheme of things.
What it certainly was not was the ideal way to end the year.
Barring injury or any other crazy reason to disrupt what’s currently in place, this weekend’s doubleheader, which airs from the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, Calif. (Saturday, 9PM ET/PT), is far more befitting of the strong 2009 campaign Showtime has enjoyed, as well as the perfect springboard to shape up its 2010 calendar.
For the second straight year, the network’s final championship fight of the season comes in the super lightweight division. This time around, it carries major implications in the shape of a division that has a leader not exactly accessible to the masses.
Until the day comes when Manny Pacquiao decides it’s financially worth dropping back down to 140 to defend his lineal championship, it can easily be argued that Tim Bradley is the best active super lightweight on the planet.
Amidst a title reign already that will run five fights deep come Saturday, Bradley (24-0, 11KO) continues to take on the best of the rest of the 140 lb. division. It began with his title win more than 18 months ago, when he traveled out of the United States – in fact, out of his home state of California – for the first time in his career to defeat Junior Witter, traveling to the Brit’s homeland to deliver what at the time served as his career best performance.
It may still rate as his best, though the fact that such a thing can be debated speaks volumes of how far the muscular Californian has come in such a short time. Some turn to his twice climbing off the canvas to outlast Kendall Holt in their alphabet unification earlier this year.
Others will argue that his best performance to date was a fight where he didn’t even wind up with the win. It’s certainly how he left the Agua Caliente Casino this past August, when former lightweight titlist Nate Campbell was forced to retire on his stool after three rounds due to a cut suffered over his eye and his vision being compromised earlier in the round.
At the time, referee David Mendoza ruled that while he saw a headbutt (in fact, several) he didn’t see blood until a punch landed, which was his defense for declaring the bout a technical stoppage in favor of Bradley, fighting 20 minutes from his hometown of Palm Springs, Calif.
The beleaguered California State Athletic Commission would get one right for a change, overruling the official verdict and determining that Campbell’s cut was in fact caused by a butt, and declaring the fight a no-contest.
What doesn’t change is the fact that Bradley was enjoying perhaps the best three rounds of his career to that point - or as he described afterwards, making Campbell look “older and older throughout the fight.”
There’s nothing old about his next challenge. If anything, there isn’t a category on paper in which Lamont Peterson doesn’t enjoy a statistical advantage, save of course for experience at the highest level.
But then, it mattered little when Bradley graduated overnight from untested prospect to undefeated champion before and after the Witter showdown. Not to mention the fact that Peterson (27-0, 13KO) doesn’t come into this weekend’s fight with the same cloud of mystery surrounding his background.
The story of Lamont and his younger brother Anthony Peterson is well-documented by now. The boxing brother act was forced overcome homelessness and the lack of a credible role model as kids growing up in the far less showcased side of our nation’s capital. Their lives changed for the better when Barry Hunter came into the picture, serving as their surrogate father and boxing trainer.
Like so many before them, boxing became means to escape from the ghetto. Both served as gifted amateurs, though their dreams of joining the 2004 U.S. Olympic boxing squad ended with at the Olympic Trials in Tunica, Mississippi earlier that year.
The location became significant as it is serves as the operating base for another pair of boxing brothers – Russ and Brian Young, who run Prize Fight Boxing. Lamont and Anthony signed with the leading mid-South promotional group, becoming regional draws in Memphis, which serves as their home away from home.
Both could box like a dream, but if there was a question mark surrounding Lamont’s career, it was his desire to close the show – or lack thereof. Often showcased with his younger brother, it was noted that Anthony was better suited for TV, while Lamont’s style suggested win today, look good the next time. Only it reached a point where networks were beginning to wonder when exactly “next time” would come.
The past seven or so fights have shown a different side of Peterson – one that wants to return to television the moment his fight ends, and one that’s not always content with fights going to the scorecards or leaving any doubt as to who won once the contest ends. Though boasting a modest knockout to win ratio, five of his past seven bouts have ended inside the distance.
One way or another, that figures to change this weekend. Few, if anyone expect anything short of a distance fight, though one that never disappoints.
Bradley rarely if ever knocks you out, but never for a lack of trying. Peterson has learned to sit down more on his punches, though not without completely abandoning his stellar skill set, particularly his ability to avoid getting hit without having to travel very far.
If the main event provides the anticipated mix of entertainment and skill level, then the night figures to have most likely been a rousing success. Even if a pure boxing match breaks out in the evening’s top bill, anything short of a shootout in the televised co-feature will be among the year’s biggest upsets.
More so than getting back into the win column, this weekend’s fight for Vic Darchinyan is about reestablishing his dominance in the super flyweight division, as he defends his lineal crown against fringe contender Tomas Rojas.
The brash Armenian, based out of Sydney, Australia, returns after a failed title bid three pounds north earlier this summer. Then-bantamweight titlist Joseph Agbeko proved to be a little too much for Darchinyan to handle, falling short in a fight where he reverted back to old form, ignoring the advice doled out in his corner and forgetting what led to this opportunity in the first place.
Prior to the loss to Agbeko, Darchinyan was enjoying by far the best run of his nine-year career, and that includes a lengthy stay as a flyweight champion. Two fights removed from a devastating knockout loss to Nonito Donaire to end his days as an undefeated titlist, Darchinyan (32-2-1, 26KO) ran roughshod over the super flyweight division in 2008.
That it began with a controversial draw on the road against Z Gorres speaks volumes of what he went on to accomplish, scoring violent one-sided knockout wins over Dmitry Kirillov and Cristian Mijares to score major divisional hardware, three belts in all as well as lineal claim.
The momentum carried over into 2009, which began with his third straight lopsided ass-kicking of a top 10 super flyweight. The victory was double sweet, as the 11th round stoppage came against longtime bitter rival Jorge Arce. Given their back and forth trash talking through the year, the fight was perhaps two years too late, but savored all the same by Darchinyan, who never eased off of the gas before forcing the Mexican to quit on his stool after 11 rounds.
Not quite as much motivation surrounds this weekend’s fight, other than the need to return to the win column. Rojas (32-11-1, 22KO) appears to be the perfect opponent on paper for Darchinyan to accomplish that mission, though nowhere is it written that it comes easy.
The Mexican southpaw has only been stopped once in his 13-year career. That moment came via one-punch body shot knockout two years against Jorge Arce in a terrific action fight in which he was more than holding his own against the former champion.
He hasn’t lost since then, riding a seven fight unbeaten streak (6-0-1, 4KO) into this weekend.
Aside from two fights that should prove to entertain, what’s most rewarding for Showtime is the fact that they’ve had a tremendous hand in developing three of the four featured fighters on this weekend’s telecast. Bradley and Peterson cut their teeth on the Shobox circuit, while Darchinyan appears on the network for the 10th time in his past 12 fights.
All appear on this weekend’s telecast facing must-win scenarios if they are to carry onward in 2010 and beyond as leaders of their respective divisions. Such results should translate to Showtime’s already stellar year, ending with a bang.

Guerrero Wins NABO Middleweight Title!
Salisbury, MD – Backed by more than 5,000 fans at Arthur W. Purdue Stadium, Salisbury sensation Fernando Guerrero earned the NABO Interim Middleweight title Saturday night with an impressive 10 round majority decision over renowned tough guy Ossie Duran.
After a tentative start during the first few rounds, Guerrero turned up the heat. A straight left hand stunned Duran in the sixth, but the New Jersey based Ghanaian hung in tough. The hard hitting Guerrero kept Duran on his toes in the seventh, tagging the respected veteran with crisp combinations. Guerrero was cut over the left eye in the 8th following an accidental headbutt, but the blood didn’t deter the hometown hero.
Guerrero maintained a high workrate, but was controversially ruled down in the final round. While his loyal fans, who packed the stadium despite poor weather conditions throughout the day, were livid with the knockdown call, Guerrero kept his composure and finished strong.
Scores of 97-93 and 96-94 overruled a questionable tally of 95-95. With the victory, Guerrero improved to 16-0 (13 KO’s), while the grizzled Duran falls to 23-8 (9 KO’s).
“ It was a great learning experience”, said Guerrero, who needed five stitches to close the gash from the headbutt. “Duran was a great opponent and he’s gone the distance with some good fighters.”
Like those in attendance, Guerrero was astonished that referee Gary Camponeschi credited Duran with a knockdown in the final round.
“ Everyone knew it was a slip.” “It rained earlier in the day, which made the canvas slippery, but I got right back up and fought to the finish.”
The Guerrero-Duran bout topped Prize Fight Boxing’s “Title Time”.

Sackey Decisions Thompson at the Fitz!

Fall was brought in with a literal bang Saturday night at Fitzgerald’s Casino, with PrizeFight Boxing’s "Fights at the Fitz" series. With five fights on the card, and an opening bout that set a high standard, the night promised a bright display of entertainment. As the evening wore on however, a few of the bouts didn't feature that expected burst of color.
The 6-round main event, 187-pound Cruiserweight Daniel Sackey (12-1-1, 6 KOs) and the 195-pound Ross Thompson (27-13, 17 KOs), in which Sackey won by unanimous decision, would underwhelm the crowd.
Each round in their fight looked very similar to the next as Sackey diligently pressed the action while Thompson was compelled to counter and hold.
There were no knock downs in the fight.
The main event was originally scheduled to feature fan favorite Tyrese “Head Honcho” Hendrix (17-0, 7 KO’s) of Atlanta, GA, against Matthew Strode (20-2, 9 KO’s).
Heavyweights Larry Slayton (1-0), 243 pounds and Mike Wilson (1-0, 1 KO), 216 pounds, initially displayed a willingness to mix it up, that could only been made more exciting by a bit more polish. However, the fight would end up being marred by Slayton's constant holding or leaning on the taller Wilson. Wilson would win a unanimous decision 40-36.
The second bout of the evening, between 141 pound Jr. Welterweights John Temple 6-10-2 (1 KO) and Winston Mathis 4-0 (2 KOs) would be a display of young fighters who were willing to dish out and take punishment, but would also be an illustration of how important matching skill and power with a willingness to fight is for a boxer.
Mathis, who clearly was the quicker fighter would spend the fight’s four rounds outrunning Temple, who had no problem with moving forward head-first, no matter what it meant to the fight’s outcome. Temple would suffer a cut over his right eye in the fourth round, and Mathis would take the unanimous decision 40-36.
168-pound Super Middleweight Jake Thomas (0-1-1) would win a unanimous decision over the 170-pound Billy Cunningham 3-3 (3 KOs) in a 4- rounder that seemed like it was more action packed than it really was. Nashville-native Thomas played to the Nashville contingent in the Fitz crowd during his entrance and after the fight. The energetic and eager Thomas, however could not parlay his 6-inch height advantage into a dominating performance over Cunningham.
Cunningham, to his credit, was willing to attempt to negate the reach advantage by charging inside during the entire fight, but on the occasions he was able to get inside, couldn’t land any effective punches. Thomas landed his best punch of the night with five seconds left in the fight with a right cross to Cunningham’s jaw that excited both the crowd and the fighter that threw it. However, the fight was already decided at that point, and Cunningham shook off the punch by the time the bell rung.
The opening bout, a 4-round Jr. Middleweight matchup of undefeated young fighters Dante Moore 5-0 (4 KOs) and Nathan Kempa 1-0 (1 KO), who both weighed in at 155 pounds, was as entertaining a fight as has ever been held at The Fitz, with both fighters receiving standing ovations from the crowd when it was over.
What started out seeming like a rout by Moore, ended up going the distance as Kempa managed to get stronger as the fight wore on. This was even more impressive, considering the fact that Moore opened up a cut over Kempa’s left eye that caused referee Bill Clancy to call time in the second round so Kempa could be examined by the ring doctor. Before the referee stepped in, Moore dropped Kempa with a right hook, but not only did Kempa bounce back up almost immediately, but he also managed to convince the referee and doctor he was able to continue.
Moore handily won the first two rounds, but it was clear that by the end of the second, he was either tired from his activity or frustrated by his inability to finish the cut and woozy Kempa.
More surprising was the third round, when Kempa began scoring with shots while Moore began to take his foot off the gas, choosing to score occasionally. By the fourth round, Moore was exhausted and spent the fight’s final 3 minutes dancing and dodging the rejuvenated Kempa in an effort to avoid being knocked down, rather than trying to finish it. Despite definitely winning the third round, and possibly stealing the fourth round, the decision would be in Moore’s favor, with the judges scoring the bout 39-36, 38-37, 39-36. After the fight, Moore would admit Kempa was a lot tougher than he originally had anticipated. He would also reveal an injury to his right hand had flared up during the fight. Moore said he originally injured the hand in a fight on June 20th.
“He had a harder chin than I thought,” Moore said. “I got tired in the fourth round, but he was a tough fighter.”
PrizeFight Boxing also promoted its inaugural Miller Light Tuesday Night Fights on Beale Street at the New Daisy this Tuesday night.

Boxing returned to the Fitz Casino and Hotel Saturday night and a standing room only crowd was entertained by a short but action packed night of fights.

Fernando Guererro TKO'd Chirs Archer Saturday 8/29, at the Fitz. Photo by: JD Meredith
Saturday August 29, 2009
The referee for the night was Randy Phillips. Ringside judges were Reccia Mullins, Gerald Deming and Louis Henry. Time keeper for the event was Mike Taylor. The honorable JD Lyons provided a voice for the event as well as a little comedy. Lyons, while introducing Fernando Guerrero in the main event, received a bloody lip when his mic was struck by a Guerrero right hand. Guerrero was merely raising his hand during the announcement but nonetheless struck Lyons' mic. After getting off the canvas, Lyons joked, "The man comes ready to fight anybody in the ring!" The crowd loved it.
In the scheduled eight round main event, undefeated southpaw Fernando Guerrero (15-0, 12 KO's - 168lbs) faced off with fellow super middleweight Chris Archer (11-9, 7 KO's - 161lbs).
Guerrero started round one with a chopping left hand to Archer's midsection. Moments later Archer was down, grimacing from another left to the body. Archer appeared to be fighting out of the southpaw stance briefly but switched to conventional midway through the round. Chris was able to land, largely by countering against Guerrero who was getting the machine rolling.
In round two Guerrero delivered an onslaught of body punches for most of the round. Archer survived the round by being slick enough to roll to his right and off the ropes were Guerrero pressed the attack.
In what would be the final round of the fight, Guerrero cranked up the heat. Where Archer could not protect with his guard, is were Guerrero hit him. Well executed shots flew and ricocheted off Archers body, forcing him to take a knee. He would make the count only to be overpowered once again and referee Randy Phillips stepped in to give a standing eight. During the count Archer's corner waived the fight off. The game Archer would not quit - thankfully his corner did it for him. Time was 2:15.
Jr. middle Shawn Porter (10-0, 8 KO's - 154lbs), now undefeated in 10 fights, made good use of his time in the ring with Lamar Harris (6-3, 4 KO's - 155lbs).
To begin the first, Porter scored with a counter right hand and short left hook that snapped Harris' head. Harris moved forward and remained busy albeit with a little accuracy.
Midway through the round, Porter hurt Harris with a flurry that sent Harris tumbling to the canvas. Harris made the count only to be dropped again. To punctuate the round Porter sent Harris to the tarp and made the count but the fight was waved off at 2:18 of the first. Both Harris and Porter were cut during the fight after a clash of heads.
In a four round middle bout Dominic Wade (4-0, 4 KO's - 164lbs) commanded the ring against Tyrone Dowdy (4-20, 3 KO's - 159lbs).
Dowdy could have protected himself better while Wade seized an opportunity, open firing to start the fight. Wade was sharp, crisp beast that came from all angles.
Dowdy’s corner threw in the towel, but not before he was sent to the canvas three times and had a nasty gash on his right eye from a slashing Wade punch. Time was 2:25.
Heavyweight Chazz Witherspoon (26-1, 18 KOs - 234 1/2lbs) took a round to get the feel of his jab while late sub Willie Perryman (10-20, 7 KO's - 224 1/2lbs) landed a few of his own along with a right to the body of the "Gentleman".
In round two, Perryman flurried to open but Witherspoon delivered a right hand that dropped Perryman. On continuation, Witherspoon chopped to Perryman's body and combo'd with a hook-right-left uppercut that prompted Randy Phillips to step in and prescribe a standing eight. After the count, Perryman landed a single jab and Witherspoon retorted with another knock down and the TKO. Time was 2:09.
Mike Wilson (1-0, 1 KO - 211.7lbs) crushed an outgunned Marvin Hunt (193lbs) in round one of a heavyweight bout.
Fights will return to the Fitz on October 3.

His cousin, Tim, first got him involved in the sweet science and Chazz went on to post a 26-6 amateur record, including the aforementioned 2004 National Golden Gloves Tournament title, in addition to being a 2004 Team USA Olympic alternate.
In 2004, Chazz turned pro and he won his first 23 fights going into a showdown against undefeated Arreola, who floored Witherspoon twice in round three, once at the bell, that led to a controversial stoppage. Chazz beat the referee’s count but since his cornerman stood on the ring apron during the count, Witherspoon was disqualified. He has since rebounded with two straight wins going into Saturday night’s throw-down with Frazier.
The 6-round co-feature showcases junior middleweight Shawn Porter (9-0, 7 KOs), 2007 World Golden Gloves champion and 2008 U.S. OIympic Team alternate, who meets Lamar Harris (6-2, 4 KOs).

Porter (9-0, 7 KOs), 2007 World Golden Gloves champion and 2008 U.S. OIympic Team alternate, meets Lamar Harris (6-2, 4 KOs) in the 6-round co-feature. “I reevaluated and rededicated myself to become the boxer I can be,” Porter explained from camp. “I’ve been able to improve a lot here and prepare for my match. It’s a very, very big fight for me because it’s No. 10. I couldn’t ask for anything better than the training I’ve gotten here. I got excited the first time I walked into Wild Card. It’s big and has everything. Guys are always walking in, so if you want to catch mitts, work on the bags, or spar with a 140 to 175 pounder, it’s not a problem.”
Porter has gained invaluable experience sparring in the past with Kelly Pavlik and Chad Dawson. Now, Freddie Roach has asked him to be a sparring partner for the world’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, Manny Pacquaio. “It’s bizarre, still surreal, not far from amazing,” Shawn said about being Pacquaio’s sparring partner for his fight against Miguel Cotto. “I’ll get in the ring confident of working hard to help make him better and learning so many things from him. They want me to play the Cotto role. It’s unbelievable. We start in mid-September.”
First, though, Porter has business to take care of in Mississippi against Harris. In his last fight on the inaugural “Boxing’s Future’s Champions” show in June, Porter stopped last-minute replacement Brandon Wood at 2:09 of the opening round. Opponents falling out have been a reoccurring problem for Shawn going back to his amateur days.
“ We’ve been dealing with opponents falling out since Shawn was 15 or 16,” his father/head trainer Kenny Porter remarked. “I used to bring in four guys when I promoted shows in Ohio. We’d sell the place out and I couldn’t take a chance that Shawn wouldn’t have an opponent. He was fighting at 165 but we had to take guys 178 pounds, twice, and even a heavyweight once. Shawn knocked them all out. It’s frustrating at times but we’re used to it. We’re looking ahead very soon to fighting opponents who put it all on the line. Fighting on this show means Shawn’s going global and people all over the world will watch him fight, not just his close friends and those at the show. It’s a great opportunity other guys in his class don’t get. It’s an opportunity we have because we’re with Prize Fight Boxing; it’s a blessing.
“ Shawn went right into training after his last fight, eight weeks ago now, the last three at Wild Card Gym. We’ve worked on his mental focus. When you win easy fighters sometimes fights are taken for granted. Right now, Shawn’s working on all cylinders. He’s in the best shape – mentally, physically and spiritually – of his life. Freddie Roach has been impressed working with Shawn the last three weeks. Bringing him into Pacquiao’s camp to play the Cotto role is exciting. I told Shawn I want him to be a consummate professional in his sport, not just a pro boxer, by studying tapes of his fights and his opponents. He’s doing that now. This has been an exceptional camp. Everything is right!”
Also fighting on this exciting card is once-beaten Philadelphia heavyweight “Gentleman” Chazz Witherspoon (25-1, 17 KOs), the 2004 National Golden Gloves champion whose only loss in 26 pro fights was last year to world title challenger Chris Arreola. Chazz, whose cousin Tim was world heavyweight champion, meets heavyweight gatekeeper Stacy “Big Foot” Frazier (14-5, 13 KOs) in an 8-round bout.
In a pair of 4-rounders, exciting middleweight Dominic Wade (3-0, 3 KOs), 4-time Junior Olympic champion, battles 23-fight veteran Tyrone Dowdy, while 2004-2005 U.S Super Heavyweight Champion Mike Wilson makes his much anticipated pro debut against experienced “Marvelous” Marvin Hunt.

| Davis Challenged by Gonzalez - Wins by Decision |
|
March 15, 2009 // By Michael Sheffield, Memphisboxing.com -- Photos by: JD Meredith -
The March edition of Prize Fight Boxing's "Fights at the Fitz" delivered the promising debut of a new pro and a performance from a crowd favorite who is capable of much more than he showed Saturday night.
Prior to the Main Event Prize fight sounded a customary ten count and offered a presentation in honor of long time glove man Paul Lucas who passed away February 25, 2009.
In the main event of the evening, undefeated Prize Fight star Mark Davis muddled his way through an 8-round bout with a tough, but frustrating opponent in Adauto Gonzalez.
It was evident midway through the first round that Gonzalez could not match Davis' speed, but he was able to frustrate his opponent like no fighter has since Davis matched up with Derrick Moon last summer on the banks of the Mississippi River.
